Tropical Storm Iselle Causes Property Damage across Hawaii

Cinnaminson, NJ – WEBWIRE

A powerful Hurricane Iselle weakened to a tropical storm before hitting the Hawaiian Islands earlier this month.  Heavy winds and rain drenched the islands and knocked out power for some.  In its aftermath, Iselle has left behind a number of water and wind-damaged homes, businesses and schools.

As the islands’ residents begin to make repairs and dry out their properties, it’s important to realize that any water damage or excessive indoor humidity can result in the growth of mold in as short as 24 to 48 hours.  Due to this fact, it is critical to begin drying materials as soon as it is safe to do so.

Some non-porous materials can be cleaned and salvaged, but most porous materials should be discarded if mold growth is present.  Residents should also be aware that improperly removing moldy materials can cause the mold spores to become aerosolized and spread throughout a property.

Flooding caused by Iselle can bring not only rainwater into a property, but also viruses, bacteria and even chemical contaminants.  Anything touched by flood waters could become contaminated as these hazards soak into them.  Many older properties that may require repairs could also expose people to asbestos or lead-based paints.  When removing debris or making repairs, these materials could become aerosolized and become a threat to anyone in the vicinity if proper procedures do not take place.

“Fortunately, Iselle weakened before making it to the Hawaiian Islands, but it still left a path of damaged properties that now need to be repaired,” said Joseph Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “It is important to begin to address any water damage and to remove moisture quickly to prevent the growth of mold.  However, people need to also be aware of the risks associated with disturbing materials that may contain lead or asbestos.  EMSL offers rapid test kits and analytical services to identify potential indoor environmental hazards to protect workers and building occupants.”
