The Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank Finds New App to Support Hunger Relief Efforts in foodtweeks™

Ohio Food Bank and New Technology Combine Community Power and Healthier Choices for Donations

Stamford, CT – WEBWIRE – Tuesday, August 12, 2014

“The Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank is delighted to work with foodtweeks™ to enable consumers to support our work in a fun and effortless way, while also consuming fewer calories on a daily basis,” said Dan Flowers, President & CEO of the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. “And foodtweeks™ aligns with our goal to promote healthy communities. A couple days of tweaking will allow us to provide much-needed meals to those in need.”

foodtweeks ™ and the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank in Akron, OH are beginning a partnership and adding to the nationwide network of affiliated food banks that the app has already accrued. The free mobile app both helps with weight control and fights hunger through donations to local food banks when users report saving calories.

Through this simple process of foodtweeks™ users reporting “tweeks” (calories cut from food), the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank will receive donations from foodtweeks™ representing the same amount of calories that were removed. This process enables the food bank to distribute an equal number of nutritious calories to hungry families through the simple process that both engages the community in making better choices and helps to end hunger.

Activating a community to gain a more conscious footing in the struggle against hunger in the United States while they are making better food choices brilliantly combines two risks on opposite ends of the spectrum and provides a positive outcome. foodtweeks™ users make it possible to serve their communities by feeding the hungry and all while cutting calories from their favorite foods in an easy, enjoyable and free way.

“foodtweeks™ is proud and excited to support Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank,” said Elisa Shannon, foodtweeks™ Executive Vice President of Partnership Development. “ Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank is a highly committed and respected organization that provides outstanding service to food-insecure members of our community.”

Last year alone, the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank distributed enough food to make more than 20 million meals and has recently been named Food Bank of the Year by Feeding America who has a network of over 202 partner food banks. As 1 in 7 people in the Northeast Ohio region are struggling to provide enough food, the services of the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank are indispensable to creating a healthier America.

Continuing to make the app fun and interesting, the designers have added a bonus element which allows a foodtweeks™ user to post a “tweek" on Facebook or Twitter which doubles or triples each donation. This both further engages the user and spreads the word about the fight for hunger.

foodtweeks™ offers a unique approach to weight management. Users simply tell the app what food they are thinking of buying, eating or preparing. The app instantly displays images of suggested “tweeks” that remove enough calories to make a positive difference but not in a way that leaves a consumer dissatisfied with their meal.

foodtweeks™ maintains a crowdsourced picture database of more than 44,000 small changes that show users how to “tweek” everything from a particular brand of cheeseburger at a national restaurant chain to grocery store purchases, and homemade dishes of every kind.

foodtweeks™ is rapidly expanding its partner-base to food banks all across the nation, with more joining each week, said Ms. Shannon, herself a former food bank executive. Food banks that wish to affiliate with foodtweeks™ may contact Ms. Shannon by email at  elisa@foodtweeks.com .

Jay Walker, the inventor of foodtweeks™, is also the chairman of Patent Properties and curator of TEDMED, the health and medicine edition of the famous TED conference. A noted entrepreneur, Mr. Walker has founded three companies that serve more than 50 million customers. He is best known as the creator of Priceline, which brought a new level of value to the travel industry.
