San Antonio, Texas, August 22, 2006, As the fall school semester approaches, the AT&T Foundation, the philanthropic arm of AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T), renews its commitment to providing attainable higher education for college students and their families. Today, the AT&T Foundation announced that it has awarded more than $5 million in college scholarships to more than 2,000 children of AT&T employees and retirees.

Since the AT&T Foundation began its scholarship program in 1993, it has invested $45 million in student scholarships, providing financial assistance to more than 15,000 students. For the upcoming 2006 — 2007 school year, 630 students will receive AT&T Foundation scholarships for the first time, and 1,434 students will renew their scholarships.

“According to The College Board’s 2005 ’Trends in College Pricing’ report, tuition and fees continue to rise at two- and four-year colleges and universities,” said Jim Ciccone, chairman of the AT&T Foundation. “Our scholarship program is an extension of the AT&T Foundation’s commitment to making higher education more attainable for all students.”

AT&T Foundation scholarships are awarded to students pursuing undergraduate study at accredited four-year and two-year colleges and universities as well as military academies in the United States. Students who maintain specified academic guidelines can renew their scholarships annually. The competitive scholarship selection process is based on an individual’s overall merit, including academics, leadership skills and work experience.

Students attending two-year colleges will each receive a $1,500 scholarship; those attending four-year colleges or universities will each receive a $2,500 scholarship; and those attending military academies will receive a one-time honorarium of $2,000 from the AT&T Foundation.

“The AT&T Scholarship Program is designed to help student achievement and success as part of the Foundation’s education initiative,” said Laura Sanford, president of the AT&T Foundation. “We’d like to congratulate this year’s scholarship recipients on their many successes in pursuit of a higher education and for receiving an award in this highly competitive scholarship program.”

Education is a primary funding priority for the AT&T Foundation. Since 1996, the AT&T Foundation has distributed more than $219 million to fund education programs that promote academic excellence for all students.
