National Recall of Tattoo Ink, Needles & Kits Due to Microbial Contamination

San Diego, CA – WEBWIRE

Last week, a California company, White & Blue Lion, Inc., recalled its tattoo ink and needles along with all tubes and ink cups as a result of pathogenic bacterial contamination. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that the use of these infected products may cause a bacterial infection that can lead to sepsis, a potentially fatal complication of infection. White & Blue Lion, Inc. and another company, 8Decades, sold the contaminated products nation-wide through www.Amazon.com and www.eBay.com.

The FDA stated the tattoo kits that included ink and needles contained “a variety of potentially pathogenic organisms that were isolated and identified including: Gram negative bacteria, Gram positive rods and cocci, which when identified to the genus and species levels included: Bacilllus spp. Sphingomonas paucimobilis, Micrococcus lutus, Corynebacterium spp., Clostridium botulinum and other Clostridium spp. No Mycobacteria were isolated.”

The FDA also noted that the ink sets had “a variety of potentially pathogenic organisms that were isolated and identified including: Gram negative bacteria, Gram positive rods and cocci, which when identified to the genus and species levels included: Bacillus spp, Acinetobacter spp., Staphylococcus haemolyticus, Sphingomonas paucimobilis. No Mycobacteria were isolated.” As of last week, one illness has been linked to the recalled products.

“Typically when a product recall is conducted by the FDA, different test methods and a more stringent level of quality control are needed for product testing to make sure the results are legally defensible,” stated Diane Miskowski, MPH, Business Development Manager at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Consumers need to be aware that test methods used for water testing cannot be used for product testing.  In addition, the quality control programs in place for water testing are not stringent enough to conduct product testing properly. EMSL is a FDA registered lab that has the proper equipment, experience and quality control program to perform the correct tests required for these types of product recalls.”
