Recreational Water Illness Threatens Millions of California Pools & Hot Tubs

Garden Grove, CA – WEBWIRE

According to a report from 2013, California leads the nation in the number of hot tubs as well as residential and commercial pools.  Over 2.75 million of the pools and hot tubs can be found across the state.  They provide residents with the opportunity for exercise, relaxation and enjoyment.

Although pools and hot tubs can provide many benefits, they can also harbor microbial contaminants.  Last year, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a report that found fecal matter in 58% of public swimming pools.  The study looked at 161 samples from pool filter concentrates.  The study detected E. coli in over 50% of the pool samples, indicating that swimmers frequently introduced fecal material into pools.  Some of the other organisms detected in the study included Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Giardia intestinalis and Cryptosporidium. These findings indicate that pathogens can be transmitted to others through the use of pools and recreational water activities.

“Recreational water illnesses, also known as RWIs, are caused by germs spread by swallowing, breathing in mists or aerosols, or having skin contact with contaminated water,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at LA Testing and EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “Chlorine does not kill all germs instantly and there are some germs that are not killed by it at all. LA Testing provides analytical services to identify the presence of a wide range of microorganisms that are associated with recreational water illnesses to help prevent people from getting sick.”

LA Testing has sponsored an online video about public pools, microbial contaminants and RWIs that can be seen at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYe9xEZTNVg.
