Maven IDS Speeds Time-to-Market in Delivering Next Generation IP-VOD, Commercial Podcasting, and Other Consumer and B2B Marketing Applications and Services

Cambridge, MA, 03/21/2005 -- Maven Networks, Inc., a software provider whose technologies enable brand marketers and media companies to deliver compelling broadband video experiences, today announced the availability of the Maven Intelligent Delivery System™ (IDS), a development platform that enables companies to quickly and cost-effectively add sophisticated IP-based delivery and cache management capabilities to broadband video applications and services for PCs and consumer devices.

According to a recent study from the Online Publishers Association (OPA) pertaining to online video viewing habits, 37% of non-video viewers stated that “better video quality” would motivate them to start watching more video online. For companies looking to deliver high-quality video experiences to their target audiences, Maven IDS removes much of the complexity involved in economically delivering DVD and HD-quality video over the Internet by offering sophisticated delivery strategies and techniques for unobtrusively downloading large files to PCs and consumer devices.

Maven IDS has already enabled AETN International, a division of A&E Television Networks, to significantly reduce costs by creating an application for sending full-length, DVD-quality “screener” videos via the Internet to its international affiliates and clients instead of via overnight shipments of VHS tapes (see today’s companion press release). Other customers using Maven’s solutions to deliver high-quality broadband video experiences include 20th Century Fox, Virgin Records, General Motors, Atom Films and more.

“With consumer spending for online content reaching $1.8 billion last year and the demand for high-quality, online video soaring, companies looking to leverage video assets for new revenue streams, marketing or B2B purposes are finally at the tipping point in this market,” said Hilmi Ozguc, CEO, Maven Networks. “Maven IDS allows these companies to take advantage of opportunities now, rather than devoting months of resources to creating custom delivery and management services in-house while falling behind their competitors. With Maven IDS, our customers can quickly and cost-effectively deliver the most compelling broadband experiences available today.”

Designed for software developers who require a flexible architecture that integrates well with existing Web infrastructure, Maven IDS provides fully-extensible, pre-built functionality for client-side cache management, download and upload management, web service requests, event reporting, DRM license management, and software installation -- saving them significant time from building, testing and maintaining these complex capabilities from scratch.

Maven IDS includes the following components and pre-built functionality:

-- IDS Client -- end-user installed software for performing background downloads and executing web service requests.

-- Delivery Manager -- responsible for handling download orders of files from the Internet using sophisticated delivery, scheduling and prioritization techniques including peer-to-peer protocols, multiple host load balancing, CDN progressive download, background download or combinations and mixes of bandwidth sources.

-- Cache Manager -- stores and manages downloaded files on disk while keeping track of how much space is available. Through auto-generated hash codes, automatically detects if a file has already been downloaded therefore avoiding duplicated downloads and reducing delivery costs.

-- Connectors -- allows browsers and other locally running non-browser applications to communicate with the IDS Client by sending and receiving string requests and responses for delivery notifications and security practices.

-- Application Services -- general set of services such as desktop shortcuts and taskbar icons, web service request, file system access, XML support, event reporting, DRM license management, platform information and logging.

-- Installer Framework -- standard IDS Client installer that can be readily customized and branded as needed

-- Developer’s Kit -- includes sample applications, documentation and development/deployment tools such as a content and application signer, download bundle generator, and agent shutdown.
