California Residents Turn to LA Testing for Answers to VOC Questions

Garden Grove, CA – WEBWIRE

Volatile organic compounds, also known as VOCs, include a wide range of chemicals used in many products and materials today. These VOCs are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids and many are known to have potential adverse health effects for anyone exposed to long-term or elevated levels of these compounds.

California’s Air Resources Board (ARB) has a number of regulations that contain VOC and reactivity limits that apply to many products sold in the state. These regulations are meant to limit people’s exposure to these potentially harmful chemical compounds.

Concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors than outdoors since they are emitted from so many products found in modern homes and buildings. Examples of common sources include: paints, paint strippers, and other solvents; wood preservatives; aerosol sprays; cleaning supplies, disinfectants and pesticides; air fresheners; stored fuels and automotive products; hobby supplies; dry-cleaned clothing; building materials and furnishings; glues and adhesives.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “Studies have found that levels of several organics average 2 to 5 times higher indoors than outdoors. During and for several hours immediately after certain activities, such as paint stripping, levels may be 1,000 times background outdoor levels.”

One of the leading providers of VOC testing services in California is LA Testing with multiple locations across the state. “Exposure to elevated levels of these chemical compounds is a concern for anyone, but children are especially sensitive to these and any pollutants,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility. “LA Testing’s network of laboratories provides VOC testing services and product off-gassing analyses so that retailers and manufacturers understand what their products are emitting and can comply with regulations. These same services are available to the public so that they know what they are being exposed to in their homes.”

LA Testing recently sponsored a video about VOCs and indoor air quality (IAQ) that can be seen at: http://youtu.be/DlbDI1ZfdTg.
