Juniper WX/WXC Platforms Accelerate TCP Protocol and Increase Bandwidth on Existing WAN Links By 12-Times

SUNNYVALE, Calif., August 21, 2006 - Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: JNPR) today announced that Farmed, a Brazilian pharmaceuticals and cosmetic products distributor, has increased its wide-area network (WAN) performance by deploying the Juniper Networks WX application acceleration platforms at multiple locations throughout Brazil. The deployment is being completed with the assistance of Juniper’s local partner, Techinova.

Farmed required a high-performance solution that enabled rapid information exchange between its corporate headquarters in São Paulo and more than 1,000 remote employees located at distribution centers in Araraquara, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia and Londrina. Using a Web-based ERP system, these centers are responsible for the daily supply of pharmaceuticals and cosmetic products to nearly 10,000 pharmacies and drugstores across the country.

To meet these requirements, Farmed has deployed Juniper Networks WX application acceleration platforms at the edge of the network at the Sao Paulo headquarters, as well as at the Araraquara, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia and Londrina branches to provide application acceleration, data compression and Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities. The Juniper Networks solution has increased available WAN capacity by more than 90 percent, enabling Farmed’s 512 Kbps link to carry up to 6 Mbps of traffic.

“Today, we cannot imagine our business running efficiently without the Juniper Networks WX platforms,” states Joao Alberto Rodrigues, CIO at Farmed. “If the network stops running, our business stops too. We have achieved significant performance improvements with the network, enabling us to use the excess WAN capacity for other applications, such as VoIP, image broadcast and video conferences via WAN.”

In addition to improving WAN link capacity, the WX 20 platforms have streamlined the performance of TCP/IP traffic through the unique Packet Flow AccelerationTM (PFATM) technology, which reduces the impact of latency on applications operating over long-distance links. The WX platforms work with both private IP networks and Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), providing a highly flexible solution for virtually any enterprise environment. Another advantage of the solution is that WX 20 is a high-availability feature - called bypass mode - to ensure the WAN link continues to operate even if there is a WX hardware or software failure. Bypass mode simply passes all traffic simply through a failed device maintaining access to centralized applications and data.

The WX application acceleration platforms also enable Farmed to implement Web-based payment capabilities with no need to upgrade links. As the information is encoded and encrypted, the WX platforms ensure the online payment system is always secure.
Other Benefits of the Juniper Networks WX Product Family

The WX application acceleration platforms use four main techniques to solve WAN bandwidth issues:

* Bandwidth Enhancements: The Molecular Sequence ReductionTM (MSRTM) compression technology removes repetitious and redundant data patterns, reducing the amount of traffic traversing the WAN and making the excess capacity available for other applications.
* Latency: The PFA technique employs two different technologies to overcome latency and deliver LAN-like TCP performance over the WAN. Active Flow Pipelining terminates TCP at the LAN-WAN boundary and substitutes a more efficient transport protocol between WX devices to ensure fast, efficient application delivery, while Forward Error Correction uses recovery packets to reconstruct any lost data, eliminating the need to retransmit messages. In addition, since packages are encoded, the data flows are more secure; there is also the option to use the cryptography function over encoded packages, meaning the packages are doubled encrypted.
* Contention/Prioritization: QoS enables users to prioritize mission-critical applications such as ERP and VoIP, ensuring sufficient bandwidth capacity is always available to accommodate the traffic flows.
* Management: The WX Central Management SystemTM (WX CMSTM) software reports real-time statistics that show how applications are performing over WAN links, providing invaluable insight into WAN operations.
