Greenberg Traurig’s Porpoise Evans Hosts Panel Discussion for American Bar Association International Section’s Africa Committee
Porpoise Evans, a shareholder in the Litigation Practice Group of international law firm Greenberg Traurig, hosted a June 3 panel discussion, “Effective Use of Witness Statements,” at the Greenberg Traurig offices in Washington, D.C. The event was arranged on behalf of the American Bar Association International Law Section’s Africa Committee and attendees included a delegation of Ghanaian lawyers and judges and select members of the District of Columbia Bar.
The panelists, prominent attorneys from several top-tier law firms including John D. Altenburg, Jr. of Greenberg Traurig, focused on providing the attendees an in-depth understanding of U.S. practices and procedures with regard to the use of witness statements. Specifically, discussion topics included:
- Depositions, including issues related to impeachment, offers of proof, refreshing recollection, hearsay and other “rules of the road”
- Use of witness statements in lieu of direct testimony as evidence in bench trials and other proceedings
- Use of witness statements in aid of foreign proceedings, congressional hearings and administrative rulemaking
Based at the Greenberg Traurig Miami office, Evans focuses his practice on litigation and compliance, including counseling and representing management in employment disputes such as wage & hour, discrimination and contract claims, as well as defending against alleged violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Fair Housing Act. His experience also includes the design and implementation of comprehensive anti-corruption compliance programs for multinational companies subject to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and the UK Bribery Act, with an emphasis on leading such compliance initiatives in Sub-Saharan Africa.
