Summerhill Residence Open to the Public in First AIA Sonoma Home Tour

SUMMERHILL OPEN TO PUBLIC IN 1st ANNUAL AIA SONOMA HOME TOUR
 
Private Modernist Retreat designed by Edmonds+Lee Architects is one of four homes selected for first ever Sonoma Living: Home Tours, Saturday, May 10.
 
Summerhill Residence has been selected by the American Institute of Architects San Francisco and Redwood Empire chapters to participate in the first Sonoma County offering of the AIA’s popular architectural Home Tours. Taking place this Saturday, May 10, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the inaugural tour will feature the Sonoma Valley retreat from Edmonds+Lee Architects’ point of view. Tickets are available online until Friday, May 9 at 3:00 p.m. at: http://aiasf.org/event/2014/05/10/sonoma-living-home-tours/. Tickets will be available to purchase day-of at Monkey Ranch in Petaluma.
 
Designed as a rural getaway for San Francisco city-dwellers, Summerhill Residence is shaped and influenced by its dramatic setting in California wine country. Summerhill’s three structures (main house, guest house and detached garage) are situated to maximize the connection between the natural and the man-made.
 
"[Edmonds+Lee Architects] worked to blend the outdoors with the indoors and to maximize the views from any angle. No matter where you are on the property, you have an amazing view of either the house or the surrounding mountains and fields,” states the homeowner.
 
Organized along a north/south axis, the buildings have been cleverly placed so that void space between the buildings creates defined outdoor courtyards. These courtyards create unique viewing perspectives of the landscape, as each is orientated in a different direction to capture distinct views of the site beyond.
 
“One of the things that I’m most proud of is…you don’t necessarily feel like you’re in a house when you’re at the Summerhill Residence”, says architect, Robert Edmonds. “Whether you’re literally outdoors or whether you’re in the living spaces…you are always reminded that you’re in a setting that is not the city, and that you’re in a setting particular to this location.”
 
To truly experience this spectacular home and its wine country vistas, Edmonds+Lee Architects will be present at the AIA Sonoma Living: Home Tour to talk about the site as well as their design inspiration and process. For the first time, this exclusive retreat and three other homes will be opening its doors for visitors to be explore, discover, and be inspired by Sonoma Valley living at its finest.
