According to a new study published in the American Chemical Society’s journal Chemical Research in Toxicology, endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) called triclosan (TCS) and octylphenol (OP) were noted as key components in the growth of human breast cancer cells in lab dishes and breast cancer tumors in mice.

EDCs have become increasingly present in products, the environment and even in our bodies, including breast milk. Triclosan is an antimicrobial ingredient used in cosmetics, cutting boards, soaps, toothpastes and many other products. Octylphenol is often found in some paints, pesticides and plastics. It has been reported that triclosan is in an estimated 75 percent of Americans’ urine.

“EDCs are a variety of chemicals that have been found to interfere with the endocrine systems of animals in laboratory studies,” says Diane Miskowski, MPH, Business Development Manager at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “There is compelling evidence that shows that endocrine systems of certain fish and wildlife have been affected by these chemicals, resulting in developmental and reproductive problems. Endocrine-disruptors are coming under increasing scrutiny from researchers worldwide to establish if they present a public health issue to adults as well as children.”
