This week, torrential rains have inundated parts of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Main Street in Manayunk was closed due to flooding Thursday morning, including sections of Kelly Drive and MLK Drive due to overflow from the Schuylkill River.

The level of water damage to homes and buildings varies, but property owners are being told by indoor environmental quality experts to be aware of any signs of water damage.  This commonly occurs on exterior walls, ceilings, attics, crawl spaces and around windows, doors and chimneys.

Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc., one of North America’s largest indoor environmental quality testing laboratories, provided the following advice:  “Although the shock that follows having your property damaged by flood waters or leaks to a building’s envelop can be a real challenge, people need to be aware of both microbial and chemical contamination hazards that may be present.  Flood waters can contain all types of chemicals and microorganisms that can pose a health threat to building occupants.  Even rain water that enters a building is a concern as many types of mold can begin to grow in as short as 24 to 48 hours on wet materials.”

For those faced with severe damage, another concern during cleanup or demolition activities is the presence of lead-based paints and asbestos in many older properties.  Even the presence of high humidity indoors can create an environment that is conducive for dust mites, which are a common allergen and can act as an asthma trigger for sensitive individuals.

People with indoor environmental concerns with mold, bacteria, chemicals, lead, asbestos, dust mites and other contaminants can turn to EMSL for analytical services as well as testing supplies and equipment.  EMSL has multiple laboratories in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, including its corporate headquarters located in Cinnaminson, NJ.

EMSL also recently sponsored an educational video about flood cleanup and indoor air quality (IAQ) issues that can be seen at:  http://youtu.be/3Q1tnHFkPF0.
