Dr. David L. S. Hung Named SAE International Fellow

SAE International announced that Dr. David L. S. Hung was elected as a 2013-2014 SAE Fellow. Hung was one of 22 Fellow inductees recognized during ceremonies at the 2014 SAE World Congress, April 8-10 in Detroit, Michigan.

Hung is an associate professor at the University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute, with a dual appointment as a professor at the Institute of Automotive Engineering, School of Mechanical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Hung has received research funding from numerous Chinese agencies including the China Ministry of Education’s New Century Talent award, National Science Foundation -China grants, and the inaugural Shanghai 1000 Scholar award. In 2012, he won two prestigious teaching awards for his contributions to the Joint Institute’s reform and innovation in training mechanical engineering students. Hung previously worked for GM, Delphi and Visteon, where he researched advanced powertrain systems, gasoline direct injection engines, fuel injection spray and optical diagnostics.

He has attained 10 U.S. patents and published more than 70 papers in various archival journals and conference proceedings, including Nature Physics, International Journal of Engine Research and SAE Transactions. He serves on the editorial board of the Progress in Energy and Combustion Science and is the vice-chairman of the SAE Gasoline Fuel Injection Standards Committee.

Hung has been the recipient of numerous SAE awards, including the Henry Souther Standards Award and SAE/InterRegs Standards and Regulations Award for Young Engineers. He earned his doctorate in mechanical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.

SAE Fellow is the highest grade of membership bestowed by SAE International. It recognizes outstanding engineering, scientific and leadership accomplishments by an individual that have resulted in meaningful advances in automotive, aerospace, and commercial vehicle technologies. The program, established in 1975, recognizes an average of 20 recipients worldwide for this honor each year.
