Last month, the Cape May County Herald published an article about a mother of two children who attended school in Cape May County, New Jersey.  According to the report, the mother intends to bring legal action in state court against the School Board because her children were exposed to mold at their school.

The woman has removed one child for home schooling and is in the process of removing the other.  The article states that the children have been hospitalized for mold exposure in the past and have shown symptoms that have included memory loss, asthma, headaches, rashes and more.

Exposure to mold can cause health effects in some people. Mold is known to produce allergens, irritants, and in some cases, potentially toxic substances known as mycotoxins.  Both inhaling and touching mold may cause an allergic reaction in some sensitive individuals.  Both dead and alive mold can cause these allergic reactions and they can be immediate or delayed. Allergic responses may include hay fever-like symptoms such as headache, sneezing, runny nose, red eyes and skin rashes.  Repeated or single exposure to mold, mold spores, or mold fragments may cause non-sensitive individuals to become sensitive to mold, and repeated exposure has the potential to increase sensitivity.

“Mold exposure can also cause asthma attacks in people with asthma who are allergic to mold,” said Jason Dobranic, Ph.D., Vice President of Microbiology and Life Sciences at EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “Breathing mold may even cause hypersensitivity pneumonitis, a condition that often resembles bacterial pneumonia. In addition, mold exposure may result in opportunistic infections in people that have a weakened or suppressed immune system.  EMSL provides environmental testing services and supplies for mold so that indoor environments with elevated levels can be identified and remediated.  Testing can also help to confirm that a contaminated property has been properly remediated.”
