National Healthy Schools Day - an Important Reminder for Puerto Rico’s Educators

With the exception of time spent at home, many school-age children spend the majority of their time indoors attending school.  In recognition of the need for schools to provide a safe and healthy environment for children and teachers, April 8th has been designated as National Healthy Schools Day. 
 
National Healthy Schools Day brings attention to the nation’s schools and the importance of providing a healthy environment for children to learn in.  The day of recognition began in 2002 and is coordinated by the Healthy Schools Network in partnership with other groups and organizations.
 
A wide range of environmental contaminants can impact the health and safety of a school environment.  These include mold, asbestos, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde, lead, mercury, PCBs and even radon.  Some of these are toxic or are carcinogenic and others are known to cause allergies, infections and even trigger asthma attacks in sensitive individuals.
