How to Avoid Your “The Block” Moment

Having an interior decorator or designer come into your home can save your marriage and your money! There are many choices and decisions to be made and both you and your partner have certain styles you like.

Decisions about the design of your home can quickly escalate into tension between couples. So often it may be required to have a third party there to mediate, which is where an interior designer can prove helpful.

Couples often have disagreements when it comes to the interior of their home.  Having an expert come in with no emotional attachment to the home can make things clearer for the couple.  It can give them a new perspective and enlighten the situation.

Some of the biggest interior design issues facing couples include:

• Colour:  Men are more likely to want to choose colours that are masculine or are their favourite colour as opposed to thinking about what will suit a room.  Men are also often worried their partners will choose something too girly and they will feel uncomfortable in that environment.
  
  
• Furniture position:  Couples disagree on where best to place lounges, coffee tables.  Another big issue can be what sentimental pieces to display and where.  If the item has personal meaning to one person and not the other this can lead to big arguments.  For example, if you don’t get on with your mother in law but your partner wants a prominent photo displayed on the mantle piece, you need to find a compromise.
  
  
• Creating a mood: Many people don’t consider what mood they’re trying to create in a room – is it playful, sexy, peaceful or a work space?  Each requires a different approach in terms of colour, furniture choice and position.
  
  
• Budget:  A mindfield for arguments because often there is a big difference in how much money each person is willing to spend.  You need to decide before you start how much to spend on your home, work out a budget and then stick to it, no matter how alluring particular items might be.
