In 1993, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued the final rule for the Nutrition Facts label that millions of Americans are now familiar with.   The Nutrition Facts label is the rectangular box that provides important information in a standard format about the nutritional content for most packaged foods.

The Nutrition Facts label was mandated after passage of the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of 1990. Before it became standard practice, manufacturers provided nutritional information on a voluntary basis that wasn’t always consistent from one product to another.

Last month, the FDA announced that the agency would like to update the Nutrition Facts label based on the latest science-based nutrition recommendations.  Paula Trumbo, Ph.D., acting director of FDA’s nutrition programs staff, explains that updates are being assessed to address such factors as current nutrient recommendations, public health concerns based on recent data on food consumption, and the agency’s desire to make this information as clear and useful as possible.  The updates are still being formulated and public input will be sought when they are proposed.

One company that has extensive experience with helping food manufacturers comply with nutritional labeling regulations and offers a wide range of food testing services, is EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “Studies have shown that a significant and growing percentage of the public regularly turn to Nutrition Fact labels for information about what they are buying for themselves and their families,” reported Joy Dell’Aringa, M.S., RM (NRM), CFSP, National Food Director at EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “Today, the FDA has the opportunity to make the labels even better by providing more information in an easy to understand format.  As a leading provider of food testing services for Nutrition Facts labels, EMSL is monitoring these potential changes to ensure that our customers have access to the most current regulations if changes are implemented.”
