California Residents Reminded of Potential Environmental Hazards Due to Remodeling Projects

LA Testing provides a wide range of material and indoor air quality (IAQ) testing services to help identify potentially hazardous materials.

Garden Grove, CA, February 12th, 2014
California homeowners are known for taking on do-it-yourself (DIY) projects of all types.  While these projects can bring new life to homes and increase their value, they can also expose building occupants to potential hazards that many people may not be aware of.
Almost every type of renovation and remodeling project will generate a significant amount of dust.  Depending on the home and type of project, this dust can not only spread to other areas of the property, but could also be filled with a number of hazardous substances.  It is important to minimize exposure to these materials by controlling the amount of dust created, isolating the project area from the rest of the house and wearing proper personnel protective equipment.  Common contaminants may include:

  • Mold - Mold is a concern in any property that has suffered water damage or elevated humidity levels.

  • Asbestos - Many older homes can have a wide range of building materials both in the interior and exterior of the home that contain asbestos.

  • Lead - Homes built before the late 1970s often contain lead-based paints.

  • Mercury - Mercury can be found in some old home thermostats and small amounts in fluorescent light bulbs.

“Whenever suspect materials are encountered or are about to be removed, people should have the materials tested for their own safety,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility.  “Even after demolition is complete and new products and materials are being installed, chemicals such as formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be a concern.  LA Testing helps homeowners all across California test for mold, asbestos, lead, mercury, formaldehyde and VOCs.  We provide sampling equipment, supplies and expert analysis.”
