Abengoa and Ferrovial selected for railway electrification project in UK
* The consortium will carry out the electrification works on 250 km of railway lines in southern England.
* The project is worth approximately €230 million (£190 million) over five years.
The consortium comprising Abengoa (MCE: ABG.B/P SM / NASDAQ: ABGB), the international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainability in the energy and environment sectors, and Ferrovial, has been selected by Network Rail to electrify 250 km of railway lines in southern England in a contract worth approximately €230 million (£190 million) over five years.
The contract includes the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of the electrification of the Basingstoke–Southampton and Basingstoke–Reading railway lines in the southern part of the country. The works are expected to begin in June and be completed in 2019.
The project will contribute to the region’s economic and social development by creating employment both directly and indirectly, and the consortium has agreed to hire 80% of personnel locally. To mitigate the environmental impact a carbon emissions reduction plan has been designed.
The project is part of the national electrification program of Network Rail, the UK’s main railway infrastructure company.
Abengoa is firmly established as a leading developer of railway projects throughout the world. It is currently building a 450 km high-speed railway line between Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia. It was also recently awarded the contract to develop, operate and maintain the electrical system for the two new lines of the Santiago de Chile metro.
This new contract strengthens Ferrovial’s position, through its UK subsidiary Amey, as one of Network Rail’s leading contractors, while it continues to increase its experience in services to a range of railway operators and suppliers in the UK, including Transport for London, which manages London Underground.
