Last month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that they, along with the California Department of Toxic Substances Control and the California Environmental Protection Agency, would be working with local officials in Southern California to launch a new intergovernmental pilot project.  The goal of the project would be to identify potential environmental health hazards facing students and staff at schools across Southern California.

The “Southern California—Clean, Green and Health Schools Partnership” is a six-month pilot project that aims to foster collaboration between stakeholders, teachers and parents through monthly meetings, technical assistance, and improved communication within the agencies and the community.  The program will be evaluated afterward to determine if it should continue.

One of the key goals of the program is the identification of environmental health issues that could potentially affect students and employees at schools.  One company that has helped many schools across California identify potential environmental hazards and indoor air quality (IAQ) issues is LA Testing.

“Environmental issues in schools can increase absenteeism for both students and faculty and impact children’s ability to learn,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility.  “Many school building are aging and the funds for preventive maintenance are not always there.  This can lead to issues with mold, bacteria, allergens, radon, asbestos, lead, formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds. LA Testing provides analytical services to help identify these and other common indoor environmental hazards.”
