Chemical Spill Causes West Virginia Governor to Declare State of Emergency

A chemical spill in the Elk River has contaminated over 200,000 water systems in the central and south western regions of West Virginia.
Emergency rooms of the Charleston Area Medical Center have been redundantly busy with concerned individuals showing no symptoms.
The restriction of water use has also affected the hospital, where alternative water cleaning methods must take place, forcing the hospital to turn away all except emergency patients.
Cases of water have nearly sold out at every Walmart and convenience store in Kanawha County. Governor Earl Ray Tomblin has declared a state of emergency for nine counties. Residents have been advised to avoid using their tap water for drinking, cooking, and bathing.
The chemical that leaked into the water system is 4-Methylcyclohexane Methanol. It is harmful if swallowed, and according to the West Virginia’s Department of Environmental Protection, it is used to wash coal before it is sold to the market.
An investigation by the Department of Environmental Protection and the Emergency Operations Center concluded that the spill came from a 48,000 gallon tank at Freedom Industries, a chemical storage facility in the vicinity of the West Virginia American Water Plant.
