Cloud Peak Energy Mine Achieves One-Million Work-Hours Safety Milestone

GILLETTE, Wyo. - Cloud Peak Energy announced that the company’s Cordero Rojo Mine, located in northeastern Wyoming, operated more than one-million work-hours consecutively without incurring a Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reportable injury. This safety achievement is due to the diligent work of employees and contractors at Cordero Rojo Mine since May 2013.

In 2012, Cordero Rojo mined and shipped approximately 39.2 million tons of coal, making it the third largest coal mine in the U.S. that year. Coal mined from Cordero Rojo is primarily shipped to electric utilities in the western, midwestern and southeastern United States. The mine has been recognized for its accomplishments for both safety and environmental stewardship.

Cloud Peak Energy has a long-standing record of safe, responsible coal production. According to MSHA, in 2012 the company had one of the lowest All Injury Frequency Rates of the top-25 U.S. coal producers.

Marshall added, “It is particularly pleasing that as the Cordero Rojo mine has passed this safety milestone it means two of our mines, Spring Creek and Cordero Rojo, have currently not had any reportable injuries for over one-million work hours.”
