Cloud Peak Energy Mine Achieves One-Million Work-Hours Safety Milestone

WEBWIRE

GILLETTE, Wyo. - Cloud Peak Energy announced that the company’s Cordero Rojo Mine, located in northeastern Wyoming, operated more than one-million work-hours consecutively without incurring a Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reportable injury. This safety achievement is due to the diligent work of employees and contractors at Cordero Rojo Mine since May 2013.

“I want to congratulate all those at Cordero Rojo Mine on achieving this significant milestone,” said Colin Marshall, Cloud Peak Energy’s President and CEO. “Great effort and dedication by each and every person at the mine was required. Cloud Peak Energy’s value of safety is an underlying principle that guides our operations.”

“All of our employees and contractors understand the company’s vision of a commitment to continuously work toward zero injuries,” said Marc Ostrem, Director of Health, Safety and Training for Cloud Peak Energy. “As part of this approach, everyone is encouraged to consistently create a safe environment before beginning any task.”

“Since our achievement of one year with no lost-time incidents in September, everyone working at Cordero Rojo Mine kept the momentum going to reach this substantial record,” said Joe Vaccari, Cordero Rojo Mine General Manager. “I appreciate all the hard work and focus that our employees have shown. If everyone goes home safe at the end of each shift, we are one step closer to achieving zero injuries.”

In 2012, Cordero Rojo mined and shipped approximately 39.2 million tons of coal, making it the third largest coal mine in the U.S. that year. Coal mined from Cordero Rojo is primarily shipped to electric utilities in the western, midwestern and southeastern United States. The mine has been recognized for its accomplishments for both safety and environmental stewardship.

Cloud Peak Energy has a long-standing record of safe, responsible coal production. According to MSHA, in 2012 the company had one of the lowest All Injury Frequency Rates of the top-25 U.S. coal producers.

Marshall added, “It is particularly pleasing that as the Cordero Rojo mine has passed this safety milestone it means two of our mines, Spring Creek and Cordero Rojo, have currently not had any reportable injuries for over one-million work hours.”
