San Mateo County Fair Awarded SNAP-ED GRANT for the 2014 Fair

Grant will help Fair expand nutrition and health education programs
 
(SAN MATEO, CA) The San Mateo County Fair has been awarded the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed) grant, a federally funded grant administered by the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service, to support nutrition education programs for persons likely eligible for CalFresh, formally known as Food Stamps.
 
According to San Mateo County Event Center’s General Manager, Chris Carpenter, “We are delighted that our programs have been awarded the grant so that we can further expand the health, nutritional and educational programs for next year’s Fair.”
 
Below is a partial list of the programs that will be funded by the 2014 SNAP-Ed Grant and featured at the Fair:
 

  • Development of school garden programs for Fiesta Gardens International, George Hall, Parkside and Sunnybrae elementary schools.


  • Providing teaching opportunities for children about the process of “farm to fork.”


  • School presentations with 4th grade classrooms at the 4 elementary schools as well as having 4 schools participate in a garden contest at the Fair.


  • Holding taste tests of local San Mateo County vegetables as well as learning more about vegetables that grow in abundance in the county: Artichokes, Brussels Sprouts, English Peas, Fava Beans, and Leeks.


  • The Fair will be providing Family Four packs to the Fair for all students at the four schools. The Fair will be promoting healthy eating habits and featuring their SNAP-Ed projects on the Fair website and social media sites to promote the Agri-Tourism exhibit at the Fair.


  • There will be cooking demonstrations and signage posted around the Fair including nutrition facts and benefits of the food items that are participating in the Healthy Food Fare.


  • Fun coloring books featuring vegetable characters will be delivered to the four schools and may be available at the exhibit along with information about proper hand washing habits.


 
This year’s Fair will run from June 7-15th with new activities, entertainment and concerts each day.
