Important New Trends For The IT Contractor Point To Interim Positions

In the world of contracting trends may come and go, but we’re seeing an interesting trend emerge in recent times, especially in the realm of information technology. There seems to be a considerable call for interim professionals in project and programme management. What is causing this rise and what should contractors consider first before they apply for such a position?

In property, retail and manufacturing it appears that the opportunities for contractors who are willing to consider interim positions is particularly strong. To be able to thrive in such positions however requires a particular mindset and a different approach. If you’re not the type of person to do well when surrounded by uncertainty, before you make your decision you should think long and hard.

For example, is the client creating this position purely as a way to test the waters? It seems that IT is constantly in a state of flux regarding new approaches, new systems and it may be that several of these companies are creating the interim position in order to conduct a running test, as it were. Perhaps they are afraid of jumping in and hiring an individual without first testing to see what he or she can do. You might say that this is a smart approach by them, but it puts a lot of pressure on you as a contractor, especially in a situation whereby your best work may not result in longevity.

Further to that, you could say that the client may not even be sure whether a permanent position is going to arise, as the business climate may dictate how they play their hand. Even though they’re paying a premium for taking on somebody on an interim basis, they may not be investing in the associated infrastructure that they would have, should they have created a position with permanence in the first place.

You may argue that this type of uncertainty is going to be prevalent no matter where you are and what contractual position you take on. You may say that there’s no such thing as “permanent” under any circumstances, anyway. So long as you understand what the client is doing and as long as you’re able to cope with working under those circumstances, then an interim contractor position may well be for you.

Understand the fluidity of the job market right now, but always ensure that you’re looking for a position in line with your emotional and psychological “best fit,” as well as your financial one.
