CBBC announces new drama commissions

CBBC has today announced that it is increasing its original British drama portfolio with three exciting new commissions.

Commissioned by CBBC Controller Cheryl Taylor, the new programmes include the brand-new dramas Hetty Feather and World’s End, plus a new series of the award-winning 4 O’Clock Club.

Hetty Feather (10x30 minutes) will be an adaptation of the popular novel of the same name by Dame Jacqueline Wilson, telling the story of flame-haired Victorian foundling Hetty and her adventures. A timeless and compelling tale, which brings the realities of the Victorian age – good, bad, funny and tragic – to life through the eyes of the boys and girls who inhabit the Foundling Hospital, Hetty Feather will air on CBBC in 2014/15. Lead writer is Helen Blakeman and executive producer is Foz Allan.

In World’s End (36x15 minutes), a group of children from very different backgrounds find themselves in a remote castle and at the start of a rollercoaster adventure full of mystery that will see them hurtling towards the World’s End. Fast-paced and full of fun, World’s End will see life and death decisions slam up against the everyday dilemmas faced by the kids in an explosive drama. The series, from writers Diane Whitley and Danny Spring, will air on CBBC in 2014/15. The executive producer is Sarah Muller.

Award-winning comedy drama series 4 O’Clock Club (13x30 minutes), executive produced by Connal Orton, is also set to return in 2015 with its familiar rich mix of funny characters and school-based adventures and mishaps – all punctuated with the stylish raps from Ben ‘Doc Brown’ Smith and Mikis Michaelides, which have become synonymous with the series.

Cheryl Taylor, Controller of CBBC, says: “CBBC is proud to be the home of so many inspiring and home-grown dramas. Our viewers cherish their relationship with Jacqueline Wilson characters and outspoken Hetty Feather promises to be the latest heroine for a generation of feisty girls. The award-winning 4 O’Clock Club welcomes its resourceful protagonist - Josh - back for more melodious mischief, and World’s End promises a thrilling season of dark adventure"

Helen Bullough, Head of CBBC Productions, says: “We’re thrilled about these commissions – we’re all on a mission at CBBC to build on our reputation for delivering distinctive, original British dramas and comedies for our young audience and these new series are a credit to everyone involved with our in-house drama development and productions.”

The new dramas, which are all developed and produced by the Salford-based CBBC Productions team, will air on CBBC in 2014/2015.
