Lyrics unveils pioneering “Mobile pass” to guarantee data protection

WEBWIRE

Paris - Oberthur Technologies, one of the world’s largest providers of security and identification solutions and services based on smart card technologies, and Worldline, an Atos subsidiary in e-payment services and transactional services, will showcase, for the first time in Europe, the “Mobile Pass” solution. This system, which was developed by the collaborative R&D Project Lyrics, aims to enhance the protection of users’ privacy. This new technology revolutionizes the way a person can be mobile in full security and privacy, and aims to enable the protection of European companies’ data while giving users all the freedom they want to access the internet. The Mobile Pass enables the use of contactless mobile services while providing a high level of guaranty in terms of privacy protection and trust.

It is anticipated that contactless technology will be embedded in all mobile phones. Arising services will combine the power of online applications - already available on smartphones - with the physical interaction that contactless technology enables. These services will cover a wide range of usage: electronic ticketing, loyalty, public transport, payment. Privacy is going to be a key issue in this context. How to enable the use of contactless mobile services while providing a high level of guaranty in terms of privacy protection and trust? How to ensure data minimization and data sovereignty in a mobile ecosystem? The Lyrics consortium provides answers to these questions.

New solution

The Mobile Pass is at the core of a user-centric architecture which complies with the most advanced requirements in terms of data protection and privacy, and offers exceptional user convenience without compromising on security. Today, Worldline and OT are showcasing the Mobile Pass in the field of Fare Management (for public transport) at the international event Cartes 2013. This solution, developed by the collaborative R&D project Lyrics, lets users benefit from public transport with strong guarantee in terms of privacy. Transport operators benefit from solutions complying with the strongest data protection regime. All transactions are secured by the highest standards in encryption technology and the privacy of user information is always protected. Overall this approach opens new perspectives that enable trustworthy transportation solutions and, more generally, contactless services.

The Lyrics project

Lyrics (Lightweight privacY-enhancing cRyptography for mobIle Contactless Services) is a collaborative R&D project initiated by the French Research Agency (ANR) and led by Orange Labs. It involves several partners including Microsoft, NEC, Oberthur Technologies and Worldline as well as French academic institutions (ENSI Bourges, ENSI Caen, the University of Paris Ouest Nanterre la Défense and the University of Rennes 1). This collaboration aims to define a solution that answers the needs of service providers and deals with the constraints of the smart card industry.

Nicolas Kozakiewicz, R&D Director at Worldline said: “Our participation in this revolutionary project is a reflection of Worldline’s pioneering innovation leadership, the importance it puts on data privacy, and demonstrates its capacity to bring cutting-edge ideas to reality. We use our expertise in the e-payment sector to optimize all security and transactional aspects in the Mobile Pass solution while at the same time ensuring complete data protection”.

”Nowadays, users Privacy is essential to the development of mobility services and OT is investing in associated technologies” said Marc Bertin, CTO at OT. “The Privacy Enhancing Cryptography solution developed in this project requires cutting edge security technology and expertise, and demonstrates OT’s leadership and innovation.”
