Tieto to renew the Finnish Transport Agency’s national road and street network system

The Finnish Transport Agency has selected Tieto to develop the Digiroad application, which handles information on Finland’s entire road and street network. The application data will be used for new navigation and passenger services as well as for transport system research.

The new system will be deployed in 2014 and further development will continue into 2015. Tieto’s role is to handle system development and Reaktor Innovations Oy will provide the user interface for updating and using the information assets.
The objective of the system renewal is to improve the road and street network data to be better up-to-date and of higher quality. The information asset is being developed in close collaboration with the National Land Survey of Finland and local municipalities. For example, the renewed Digiroad will serve as a national database on bus stops and stations, providing valuable data for public transportation travel time and routing services.

“The information system renewal is probably the easiest part of this project. High-quality and up-to-date data will generate the foundation for a variety of nation-wide commercial services. A prerequisite for success in this project is to motivate the municipalities to maintain the national road and street network attribute data as required by law,” says the Finnish Transport Agency’s Markus Melander, project manager for the initiative.
“We all benefit from uniformed data supporting navigation services. For instance rescue services will benefit significantly from having up-to-date details on roads and streets in just one system,” Melander continues.
