Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Oregon

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV),”Between 1997 and 2003, 123 homicides occurred among Oregonians age 12 and older, due to intimate partner violence.  They also state a 2001-2002 survey conducted in Oregon showed that 1 in 10 women experienced intimate partner violence in the 5 years preceding the survey-more than 85,000 women.”
 
Domestic violence is real. “Domestic violence includes hurting, threatening or putting someone down or making them afraid,” according to the Oregon Department of Human Services website.  They add, “It also includes trying to control them or make them do things.”  Do you know anyone who is a domestic violence survivor? Let them know it’s not their fault, that you care about them, and help him or her develop a safety plan.  A recent Oregonian article indicates that Oregon has one of the highest rates per capita in the country of sex offenders living in the state, and one of the worst systems of sex offender registration.
