Syntrinsic Investment Counsel, an independent investment advisory boutique firm dedicated to advising nonprofit organizations and philanthropic families, announced that Javier Baz has joined the company. A Wharton and Kellogg graduate with a degree in finance, Baz is responsible for developing and serving new client relationships.

“Javier has experienced success at so many levels and yet treats people and ideas with thoughtfulness and care,” said Syntrinsic founder and managing partner, Ben Valore-Caplan, “I am delighted that Javier has chosen to devote his considerable skills and experience to Syntrinsic and our clients.”

Prior to joining Syntrinsic, Baz served as business head and chief investment officer of the International Group and Private Client Group at the asset management firm, TCW, where he bore responsibility for $10 billion in assets. At TCW, Baz ran the firm’s non-U.S. publicly traded securities units, leading groups in Los Angeles, Hong Kong, New York and London. His experience as chief investment officer and emerging market debt portfolio manager informs Baz’s ability to assess macroeconomic trends.

“I wanted to be professionally engaged with people doing meaningful work and challenging themselves intellectually,” said Javier Baz. “I first learned of Syntrinsic as a committee member when I helped select Syntrinsic to advise an independent school’s endowment. Working with Syntrinsic at that time, I appreciated their philosophy and guidance, their values, and the care with which they have built a strong business doing good work. In my first few weeks at Syntrinsic I have found that the care I experienced as a Syntrinsic client is just as present now that I am a part of the firm. I’m very excited.”

Prior to his time at TCW, Baz had consulted at McKinsey & Company and headed up capital markets efforts in the emerging markets for Merrill Lynch. Baz lives in Denver with his wife and two sons.
