According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “Lead poisoning is entirely preventable, yet childhood lead exposure is estimated to contribute to about 600,000 new cases of intellectual disabilities every year. Even though there is wide recognition of this problem and many countries have taken action, exposure to lead, particularly in childhood, remains of key concern to health-care providers and public health officials worldwide.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that at least 4 million households have children living in them that are being exposed to lead. They also state that there are approximately half a million U.S. children ages 1-5 with blood lead levels above 5 micrograms per deciliter (µg/dL), the reference level at which CDC recommends public health actions be initiated.

In recognition of the dangers associated with exposure to lead, especially with children, October 20th through the 26th of this year has been designated as National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week.  The theme for this year, “Lead-Free Kids for a Healthy Future" underscores the importance of the many ways parents can reduce a child’s exposure to lead and prevent its serious health effects.

“In the United States, there are thousands of professionals who have dedicated their careers to identifying lead hazards and to removing it from indoor environments,” reported Marybeth Mainelli, President of MBM Insurance Resource Center.   “Many of these professionals have turned to MBM Insurance Resource Center for specialized insurance coverage to be able to offer these types of services at affordable rates to industry and the public.”
