Sun Secure Mail and Next-generation DNS Solutions Released to Reinforce Sun’s Telco Industry Leadership

SANTA CLARA, CALIF. August 8, 2006 The success of a Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq: SUNW - News) program to help telecommunications operators and service providers boost existing networks and offer new services cost-effectively is confirming Sun’s leadership in the fast-evolving, ultra-competitive telecoms space. In the six months since it was launched, the new program has delivered customized, revenue-generating solutions to industry leaders such as Bell Canada, BellSouth, USA.NET, and Verizon.

“Sun will continue to bring more telecoms solutions to the market in the coming year. These will be focused on helping telecom operators and service providers offer compelling new services while juggling the complex challenges of consolidation, convergence and cost containment,” said Darrell Jordan-Smith, vice president, Communications, Sun Microsystems, Inc.

In a recent Gartner research report “Top Five Issues Facing Communications Operators Encompass Both High Tech and High Touch (12 June, 2006)”, research vice president, Martin Gutberlet writes, “While carriers historically have been able to depend on high revenue growth, they now face just the opposite prospect of rapidly declining revenue growth and their cost structures are out of sync with this new reality. As a result, many carriers have reacted by focusing purely on cost-cutting at the expense of growth strategies. To survive, they must restructure in ways that generate new revenue streams and cut costs at the same time.”

Sun Secure Mail Powers New Services from BellSouth, USA.NET, Verizon

The first solution created under the new Sun program -- Sun Secure Mail -- was launched last year. Sun Secure Mail is a fully-hosted managed service that allows service providers to offer a value-added solution to the challenges of email privacy and security. The service is easy for customers to use, requiring only a simple plug-in. BellSouth, USA.NET and Verizon have all launched Sun Secure Mail-based services for their customers.

* USA.NET encrypted email: http://www.usa.net/encrypted/
* Verizon Secure Mail: http://business.verizon.net/securemail

Since service providers need not install any infrastructure to deploy the Sun Secure Mail service, they benefit from speed-to-market and avoid the complexities and costs associated with new service launches. The solution allows service providers to tap into the urgent need for greater email security today as companies and individuals increasingly entrust more and more confidential information to email transmission.

Next-Generation Domain Name System Creates Value for Bell Canada

Sun launched a key solution with partner Nominum in March. The next-generation Domain Name System (DNS) / Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) solution was designed to allow customers to deploy a scalable and resilient network naming and addressing infrastructure. The Sun-Nominum solution eases deployment, reduces cost and provides service availability and connectivity for broadband internet, VoIP and IPTV users.

Two months after the launch of the solution, national communications leader Bell Canada deployed the solution to strengthen its ability to deliver high-quality Internet and IP-based services and build its next-generation service infrastructure.
