‘Breaking Bad’ Finale Shines the Spotlight on Clandestine Drug Laboratories

A week ago, over 10 million viewers tuned in to watch the finale of the popular ‘Breaking Bad’ series.  The award winning drama captivated audiences and educated many to not only the personal dangers associated with methamphetamine use and production, but also the toxic chemicals that are used to manufacture the drug.
 
Over the years, the series had the main characters set up clandestine laboratories to make the illegal drug in everything from homes and RVs to businesses.  The two main characters were often seen wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) during the production of meth to protect themselves from the toxic chemicals used. While the series was fictional, many of the scenarios showing the danger of meth production and the wide range of places it can be made in were not.
 
The widespread production of methamphetamine resulted in the Methamphetamine Remediation Research Act of 2007.  It required the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to develop guidelines for remediating former methamphetamine labs.  In response, the EPA published voluntary guidelines for methamphetamine laboratory cleanup in 2009.
