Palm Springs Apartment Complex Residents Voice Mold Concerns

Last month, KMIR NBC 6 broadcasted a report about residents’ concerns over living conditions in an apartment complex in Palm Springs, California. It was the second report by the station about alleged mold in the complex that month. Since the initial report, additional current and former tenants came forward to voice their concerns.

According to the report, some residents don’t feel their concerns are being properly addressed by the apartment’s management. It goes on to state that neither the City of Palm Springs nor the Riverside County Health Department will inspect the apartments for mold.

Almost anyone can develop a sensitivity to mold and this can be especially true for young children and the elderly. Allergic reactions to mold are common and can be immediate or delayed. In addition to causing allergies, mold is also a known asthma trigger. Some types of mold often found in water damaged buildings, such as Aspergillus, can even cause infections in susceptible individuals. Another concern is mycotoxins, which are a type of toxin produced by some types of mold.

“According to the report, the residents are on their own to test for elevated levels of mold in the apartments,” reported Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility, a leading mold and indoor air quality testing laboratory. “Residents can hire an indoor air quality professional to inspect their home and conduct testing or they can perform some basic tests to determine if they have mold.
