What is Resilience? Quadriplegic Motivational Speaker Shares Her Personal Definition of Resilience

WEBWIRE

ADELAIDE, Australia September 2013 – *. What is resilience? Resilience is a skill that can be learnt, and once learnt, can help offset factors that increase the risk of mental health conditions such as a lack of social support, being bullied or previous trauma – really resilience is building a well of ‘life can’t get me down’ thinking within. Building resilience empowers people to move forward with their lives regardless of the obstacles thrown at them. This is a quality quadriplegic motivational speaker Stacey Copas knows well. www.staceycopas.com/

In her latest eBook ‘How To Be Resilient, Stacey reveals her definition of resilience – Responsibility, Excuses, Support, Improvisation, Language, Inspiration, Expand, Next, and Time. Here is a snippet of 3 of these principles:

Language – Stacey says, “One of the easiest ways to get things back on track when something goes wrong is to change the language we use in conversations with others and in our own thoughts. Whenever possible, emphasise the positive and take the attention off the negative. Too often people exaggerate the negative – I refer to this as ‘awfulising’ a situation.”

Inspiration – “Inspiration is our drive to achieve. It is our purpose, our vision and our big ‘why’,” says Stacey. Her advice? “When something goes wrong, revisit the purpose and reasons behind the goals you have set. Think about why you desire to achieve that particular goal. How will you feel when you are successful? Doing this will energise you to stay focussed on getting past any problem that may rear its ugly head along your journey.”

Expand – People can expand the world of others by giving their time, money, or both. Stacey says, “By expanding the world of others, you are in turn expanding your own world. Share what you know and do it abundantly. Some people are so fearful of loss that they keep everything they know to themselves. When you help others to achieve their goals then they will be keen to assist you in any way they can to achieve your own goals.”
