Colorado Flood Victims Look for Ways to Resolve Microbial Hazards

Just as thousands of properties that suffered damage from Hurricane Sandy almost one year ago are still dealing with mold issues, residents of flood ravaged Colorado are being told to be on the lookout.  Parts of the state received so much rain earlier this month that the resulting floods in some areas have been called a thousand year event by some experts.
 
A preliminary estimate, from the Colorado Office of Emergency Management, projects that approximately 17,500 homes have been damaged and over 1,500 destroyed.  In addition, countless area businesses have also suffered water damage or been ruined.  Many buildings that were not destroyed have experienced extensive water damage which can support mold growth in as short as 24 to 48 hours. 
 
Some people have already begun the process of rebuilding their homes, businesses and communities.  Residents have been advised to be aware of a number of potential health and safety hazards, including high levels of indoor airborne mold.  Exposure to mold can cause everything from allergies and respiratory concerns to fungal infections and act as an asthma trigger for some people.
