Is it Hard to Create a Waste-Free Home?

Everyone wants to go green, but having the level of commitment and dedication it’s going to take to get there is never going to be easy.

You’re going to have to swap out all your one use items for reusable items, start thinking about how your waste really impacts your family and those around you, as well as how much money and time you want to keep spending on stuff that just doesn’t matter. It’s a radical life decision and here we’re going to talk about how with a little effort you can live the green dream you’ve always wanted.

Be a Locavore

Locavores are people that eat food and buy products made locally. While you’re not going to be able to get a lot of stuff locally, you might be surprised at just how much money, waste and carbon you can save just by switching to local produce in the summer time. Try to be more conscious of where your dollars are going and how much fuel is used to truck all your stuff in.

Start Looking at Your Commute

How much time and fuel do you spend each day on your commute. Do you really need to spend that much time? Are you happy sacrificing an extra 2 hours a day to get to work in your car? Could you get there faster on the train or with mass transport? Do you really like this job enough to keep torturing yourself this way? Plenty of places allow you to work from home or telecommute, so think about your options here. If worse comes to worse, start looking at homes for sale closer to work.

Think About a Home Energy Audit

A home energy audit can reap big rewards – and if you’re thinking about selling or buying a luxury home you’re going to need to get one anyway. Don’t be afraid to spend on this one, in most cases it’s tax deductible anyway.

Do You Really Need to Buy That?

A lot of us shop when we’re stressed and buy stuff on impulse, but the next time you reach for your credit card, ask yourself if you really need to buy it. Do you need it, or do you want it? Could you get this second hand, could you get it for free? Are you going to really have a use for it? You don’t have to skimp on all of life’s luxuries but you don’t want to end up trapped in a cycle of buying and creating more waste.

Give Me That Old Fashioned Clean

Instead of using Windex, which has been shown to stunt development and contains known hormone disruptors, go for that old fashioned clean. Baking soda, lime juice, vinegar and more can be used to make your home sparkle like no one’s business. Don’t be afraid to try new things and research online to see which cleaners are right for the job.
