Unique Social Media Integration Allows Friends To Share Weather News Wherever They Are

LONDON: The Weather Channel today announced the launch of “My Friends’ Weather,” an innovative new digital service using enhanced social media integration to allow users to keep track of friends and the weather wherever they are. UK consumers will be able to share weather alerts and conversations about the weather in their location as it happens across the country or the rest of the world.

The “My Friends’ Weather” application tracks and highlights friends who may be affected by severe weather conditions such as heat waves, winter storms, flooding or gales. Users simply log in using their Facebook account and an interactive map highlights where friends are located and issues colour coded alerts: Minor (yellow), Moderate (orange) or Severe (red), to notify if they are due to be affected by adverse weather conditions, which can be passed on and shared.

The service, which is available now on www.weather.co.uk and its mobile destination will also provide a content driven feed including weather news around local and international events such as festivals, sporting events and Bank Holidays. Users will instantly be able to see how weather may be affecting friends at the time. It will also allow users to share weather alerts, news and comments online.

Ross Webster, Managing Director, EMEA, The Weather Company International, said, “This is a highly interactive tool which lets users connect with the people they care most about, based on the weather they are experiencing in their location. The data is available whether friends and family are in the UK or abroad. The launch of “My Friends’ Weather” is another example of how we continue to innovate and deliver the most personally relevant weather experience to people in the UK.”

Webster continued, “Our new tool will encourage users to integrate and communicate with each other about the weather and how it is affecting friends and family around the events that are important to them. The launch will also provide additional opportunities for our advertisers who will benefit from being able to engage with our socially active audience.”

Leon Brown, Chief Meteorologist, The Weather Company International, said: “The UK does not experience as high a volume of severe weather as some other countries, but throughout the year it does feel the impact of a wide range of extreme weather. The UK has an average of 15 severe weather warnings issued per year, with tornadoes flooding and heat waves commonplace. Local weather in the UK is often difficult to forecast precisely in advance, and the ‘My Friends Weather’ app allows users to remain aware of the severe weather their friends are experiencing locally, in real time.”
