SanAir Technologies Takes Steps to Avert ’Zombie Apocalypse’

WEBWIRE

RICHMOND, Va., (Aug. 20, 2013) -- SanAir Technologies Laboratory, a national environmental testing and analysis facility, is aware of the destruction Mother Nature can inflict. The Mid-Atlantic states’ string of unusual storms this year created an uptick in business in the company’s industry, while at the same time creating the risk of severe service disruptions.

“At SanAir we know that during such times, our customers are on the front lines doing the sampling that will allow recovery to begin as quickly as possible for victims of catastrophic events and the environmental hazards that can accompany them,” SanAir CEO Sean McGlynn said.

“Since our process requires sensitive and expensive equipment to provide quick turnaround, we decided to project a ‘worst case’ scenario and work to prevent that from happening,” McGlynn said.

“We quickly upgraded our disaster recovery plan. Our team accomplished that; and –  while not a laughing matter – we began to refer jokingly to our efforts as preventing the ‘Zombie Apocalypse,’ a humorous reference to a popular series of  computer games.”

The result is now in place and involved major installations of the physical and technical operations:

This disaster recovery plan includes redundant power supplies, with an 85-kilowatt backup generator that will automatically go online in the event of a power failure.  Redundant switches and outside data communications from separate carriers were installed.

The heartbeats of the organization, its computer servers, were moved to a “virtual server” system.  This means the company’s critical customer analyses are no longer tied only to physical servers. “Virtual server software works across a number of servers as if they were one,” McGlynn said. ”It’s like being ‘cloud-based,’” he said, “if one traditional server were to go down, there are automatically a series of virtual backups that will seamlessly take up the first server’s tasks.”

SanAir’s datacenter is stored locally and offsite, ensuring clients there will never be a break in their ability to continue receiving timely services.
