Learn from the Leaders: Lean Material Management Workshop At Toyota

Good material management is a necessary part of manufacturing success,  and Toyota is known to be the best. The management method of choice for most inventoried items is called Kanban, a parts management method that can eliminate parts shortages. Toyota was instrumental in developing the Kanban method, and this 3-day workshop focuses on all of the various material management methods in use at Toyota Material Handling.

Participants will study each of the principal Material Management methods, and immediately apply these methods in a simulated factory. They will then have a chance to see the techniques in action on the factory floor, at the Toyota Material Handling lift truck plant in Columbus, Indiana. This factory was voted one of the top 10 plants in the US in 2011 by Industry Week magazine.

Richard Rahn, the president of the Lean Factory Group and a principal with the Leonardo Group said “Learning opportunities like this are rare. This is a chance to learn about all of the various Lean material management methods, and then see them in action in a highly successful plant. We have been working with Toyota Material Handling to validate and teach the material handling methods currently in use, and two factory tours provide a unique chance to see a mature material management system in action.”

The workshop is sponsored by the non-profit Lean Factory Group, including members Toyota, Bosch Rexroth and Orgatex Americas. Participants will use a PC-based Kanban database in the hands-on portion of the workshop, and get exposure to the use of simulation modeling tools to design a robust “milk-run” delivery system.
