Fidelity Labs Explores Prototype, Producing Concept Video; Creates Community Website for Innovative Technologies

BOSTON– Fidelity Labssm, a part of the Fidelity Center for Applied Technology, Fidelity’s unit focused on innovation, today launched a preview of the Fidelity® Market Monitor for Glass, the first investing Glassware widely available for Google Glass.

Glass is a tiny computer packed into a lightweight frame that rests just above the eyes. Glass and the Glassware that runs on it make exploring and accessing information on-the-go faster and easier. Glass also enables a range of voice-enabled, hands-free online computing activities. Fidelity is participating in Google’s developer program, which gives select companies and individuals early access to Glass.

Those who preview the Fidelity Market Monitor for Glass can view a hands-free display of quotes from major U.S. stock indexes at market close. They can then go to Fidelitylabs.com to offer their perspective and feedback on this concept, helping Fidelity refine future applications of wearable computing technology.

“Our leading hubs of innovation, Fidelity Labs and the Fidelity Center for Applied Technology, have long served as a resource of technological expertise for our company as we seek to deliver innovative services that may make our customers’ financial lives easier,” said Sean Belka, senior vice president and director of the Fidelity Center for Applied Technology. “We encourage investors to join with us and offer their insights and feedback on emerging technologies, such as the Fidelity Market Monitor for Glass, our first step in exploring the potential of wearable computing.”

Blog Post and Concept Video
Fidelity Labs has published a blog post and short concept video on FidelityLabs.com, looking at how investors may use Glass in the future. In the video, an investor wearing Glass uses voice commands to access a Fidelity® account, view market news and information, and obtain up-to-the-minute stock quotes using visual cues in the investor’s line of sight, such as a company logo.

Fidelitylabs.com: A New Social Website for Investors
Today, Fidelity Labs also announced the launch of Fidelitylabs.com, a website and online community that highlights the work Fidelity Labs does with emerging technologies, and encourages visitors to engage in conversation about new financial services products and technologies. The site also features Fidelity experts discussing how technology continues to re-shape the world of investing.

FidelityLabs.com and Google Glass are two of the most recent examples of our longstanding commitment to technological innovation,” said Hadley Stern, vice president, Fidelity Labs. “Some of the ideas we explore are aspirational and may still be years away from every day use. Others may be just around the corner. What we do know is that the time to explore is now. Today’s emerging technologies, as they evolve, will ultimately shape the future of investing.”
