Sasha Feldman, sculptor, exhibits at S. Bitter-Larkin Fine Arts

S. Bitter-Larkin Fine Arts is pleased to announce an exhibition of the ceramic sculptures of artist Sasha Feldman. The show, entitled Idols and Artifacts, opens Saturday August 10th at the Dering Harbor Inn located at 13 Winthrop Road, Shelter Island, NY.  An opening reception will be held from 5 to 8 .
SASHA FELDMAN ;(b.1989, New York City) was exposed from a young age to the diverse array of art housed in the city’s museums. While studying Fine Art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Feldman took up a passion for the ancient practice of clay sculpture, and has since used the medium as a means to bridge his wide art-historical interests with the realities of his own contemporary moment.

Interested in the visual languages of both modern and ancient image-making, Feldman’ art practice is governed by the tensions and intersections between these two epochs. “Idols” is series of figurative works that is influenced heavily by the idolatry of Indigenous Art and its encounter with Modernist Abstraction in the early 20th century. While the personified “Idols” toy with the boundaries between figurative representation and living presence, the “Artifacts” are dictated by a cold and calculated attention to form. Inspired by Neo-Plasticism, Feldman’s “Artifacts” attempt to shape the amorphousness of clay into the disciplined geometry of technological reproduction in the Modern Age. Varying widely in theme, the two series are linked by colors of Feldman’s glazes, the palette of which refers to the pop imagery of his childhood, putting forth a convergence between the Ancient, the modern, and the Retro.
The works will be on view until August 18th.
