Self Defence Classes for Kids Help Prevent Depression, Instructor Reveals

WEBWIRE

QUEENSLAND, Australia August, 2013 – According to data collected from a recent report conducted by United States Child Welfare Agencies, 42.7 per cent of teenagers reported at least one mental health problem. The study reveals that 9 per cent reported depression, 13.5 per cent reported anxiety, 13.9 per cent reported suicidal tendencies, 18.6 per cent had ADHD, and 23 per cent had substance use or abuse.*

Being a teenager in the fast-paced, technology driven world of today is not easy. Adolescents feel all kinds of pressures — to do well in school, to be popular amongst peers, to gain the approval of parents, to make the team and ultimately ‘to be cool’. In addition, many teenagers have other problems to cope with; they may worry about a parent being out of work or even stress about the family’s financial issues. Adolescents may be hurt or confused by their parents’ divorce, or they may have to learn how to live with a parent’s alcoholism or mental illness.**

Damien O’Flaherty, CEO, founder and Master Instructor of Factor10™ Martial Arts, weighs in on the subject: “There are no quick fixes in life. The Martial Arts way, being a lifelong thing, does not teach us the pharmaceutical (quick fix) approach, as I like to call it. Instead Factor10™ Martial Arts is about passion and building life long coping skills. A passion to help everyone reach their full potential, a passion to guide people to be the best that they truly can be, and also a passion to assist individuals to work through those stressful emotions that seem to have teenagers especially, so ‘bogged’ down and feeling like they are not worthy.” www.factorten.com.au/

“Anyone who touches our organisation is touched by the Martial Art tradition. Our members, our suppliers, our staff, the community – everyone! Our organisation was born from a need to give ourselves life – a life where we reached beyond the day-to-day grind that limits us all in achieving our potential. Martial Arts has given us more life, and through our programs, we can help to give others more life. It’s about getting the best and most out of life through Martial Arts,” Damien explains further about his self defence classes in Brisbane.

Here are the core values that Factor10™ Martial Arts promotes in their self defence classes for children:

1.         Always have fun.
2.         Always persist.
3.         Family and belonging are everything.
4.         Strive for personal excellence.
5.         Martial Arts is a life journey.

Factor10™ Martial Arts has introduced a growing number of children to self defence education. Damien shares, “I have a number of students for whom I have been their master since early primary school, some year two, who now go to university and I have been their Martial Arts master all those years of their lives.” www.factorten.com.au/

A mother filled with gratitude about the self defence classes for kids remarked, "What sport can a child do where they have the same mentor, coach, or master from when they are in year two to when they go to university and beyond? It was a bit akin to the Mr. Miagi in ‘The Karate Kid’.”

Damien, just like the rest of his team at Factor10™ Martial Arts, provide self defence classes in Brisbane and are more than happy to lend a hand in order to help kids and teenagers alike, who are struggling with the stresses of their day-to-day lives. Damien is proud to say, “Giving people more to life was our vision—our dream that has now become a reality.”
