Zebra crossings in Amsterdam will be rolled out in the colors of the rainbow on Monday July 29 for the city’s Gay Pride which starts this Saturday.

Event sponsor AkzoNobel will be coloring the zebra crossing opposite the city’s Homo Monument, where it has also recreated the iconic ‘Abbey Road’ scene.

AkzoNobel employees Mike Lightfoot and Esther Meerstadt joined Amsterdam Nachtburgermeester Mirik Milan and Drag Queen Hoax for the re-enactment.

AkzoNobel will also color the zebra crossing on the Zuidas in front of its Amsterdam headquarters for Amsterdam Gay Pride and hold an ‘Abbey Road’ photo competition to promote the event using the twitter hashtag: #floatingcolors. Photos can be submitted on http://www.akzonobel.com/truecolors until August 5, 2013 and the winner will be awarded AkzoNobel paint worth €500.

AkzoNobel will also enter a boat in the Canal Parade under the theme “Show Your True Colors”. The Canal Parade on August 3 will be the highlight of the Amsterdam Gay Pride and see 80 boats sail through Amsterdam’s canals watched by 500,000 spectators.

Commenting on AkzoNobel’s sponsorship of the Amsterdam Canal Parade, Mike Lightfoot, AkzoNobel Head of Public Affairs, said: “Nobody has all the answers and if you have a work environment in which everyone has exactly the same background, that’s bound to have its limitations. That’s why at AkzoNobel, we want to create an environment in which everyone’s ideas go far – whatever your sex, age, race, or sexual orientation. We’re therefore proud to sponsor this year’s Gay Pride and with our theme ‘Show Your True Colors’, we aim to show how we at AkzoNobel embrace diversity of all kinds.”
