Local Denver Architect Presents Seminar at National AIA Convention

WEBWIRE

Respected architect and recent addition to the Godden/Sudik team of architects and designers, Doug Walter, AIA, presented a seminar during the recent American Institute of Architects convention held in Denver.

Attended by over 15,000 architects from around the country and overseas, the AIA Convention is an eagerly awaited event, presenting the latest products and trends to a professional audience.  A number of key staff from Godden | Sudik Architects also attended this year’s convention.

The selection process for seminars at AIA is a grueling one that starts a year ahead of the convention. 500 initial seminar submissions are narrowed to 250, then to a final cut to a relative few.  Sessions are scored on relevance, level of difficulty, and content by a volunteer committee of architects and architectural educators.

Mr. Walter and colleague Robert Loversidge, FAIA, presented Sympathetic Additions to Historic Buildings. The seminar explained how the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation could be applied to help ensure that a new addition to an older building could be both compatible and differentiated.  “When done well, additions can help insure the longevity of great old buildings by giving them new vitality. One must use care to make sure that proposed additions don’t overwhelm or devalue the great old buildings to which they’re attached,” said Walter.

Using dozens of examples from around the country, including homes, schools and civic buildings, the two engaged an audience of more than 150 architects on the first full day of the convention.

While principal of his own firm, Doug Walter Architects, and as an historic architect/ project manager working on preservation projects for the National Park Service, Doug has a long history working primarily in residential architecture in the Denver area. He has won awards for sympathetic additions from Historic Denver, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the Institute for Classical Architecture for his restorations and additions in many of Denver’s historic districts.

Doug brings a strong historical background and approach to Godden | Sudik Architects, in both new and rehabilitation design work.
