ExtraSchicht in the Red Dot Design Museum: five highlights inform visitors about the fascinating world of design in the night of industrial culture

WEBWIRE

The ExtraSchicht is organised annually and has become a fixed event in the Ruhr metropolitan area. On 6 July 2013, its 13th edition invites visitors to the night of industrial culture – also at UNESCO world heritage site Zollverein. Where can the heritage of the region be better celebrated than in the Red Dot Design Museum which documents both the industrial era and, with its about 2,000 design innovations, the present?

Current product culture in the midst of old industrial architecture – that is what visitors can experience in the world’s largest exhibition of contemporary design. On 4,000 squaremeters and five floors, they can discover the complete range of very shapely and highly innovative everyday items in an extraordinary industrial scenery. From functional kitchen tools to prize-winning computers to furniture and exceptional jewellery: the special exhibitions “Design on Stage – Winners Red Dot Award: Product Design 2013” and “Communication+” by Lenovo make outstanding design become experiencable, as touching and testing most of the objects is allowed.

Besides the free admission to the Red Dot Design Museum, visitors can participate in two free guided tours of the house. At 6.30 p.m., a one hour lasting tour, especially for families, is on the agenda: Together with their parents, young visitors can become acquainted with the Red Dot Design Museum and learn in a coherent way why the use of another material can turn a conventional bathtub into an absolutely new experience.

At 10 p.m., the Red Dot Design Museum invites all design enthusiasts to another scouting expedition. In the course of the tour, the participants will get informed, among others, about how designs have changed over the years. And they will find out that they are surrounded by thought-out product designs around the clock in their everyday life.

The improvisational theatre “The Shakespeare Connection” offers a slightly different way of looking at things. The group of artists reveals the truth about inanimate objects – by night at the museum. Is the green lamp in the entrance having a fling with the candlestick? If yes, does the peeler know about it? At 7, 9 and 11 p.m., visitors will learn more about intrigues and jealousy, secret amours and stylish larks of the design pieces which stay still during the day. The guests can look forward to spontaneous actions on the object and becoming a part of the “show” themselves.

The group size allows for a maximum of 25 participants each. Therefore, the Red Dot Design Museum kindly asks for advanced registration by phone on +49 (0)201-301040 or via e-mail to museum(at)red-dot.de.
