Dow Supports National Action Plan for Energy Efficiency

WEBWIRE

San Francisco, CA - July 31, 2006, The Dow Chemical Company today announced its support for the National Action Plan for Energy Efficiency, as part of the July 31 national rollout of the plan at the NARUC (National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners) Summer Meeting in San Francisco. The National Action Plan for Energy Efficiency presents policy recommendations for creating a sustainable, aggressive national commitment to energy efficiency through gas and electric utilities, utility regulators, and partner organizations such as Dow. These recommendations could save Americans billions of dollars on energy bills over the next 10 to 15 years, while contributing to energy security and improving the environment. The Action Plan was developed by more than 50 leading organizations in an effort sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Organizations like Dow are taking specific actions to make the National Action Plan a reality.

“Energy efficiency is a win-win for business, the economy and our environment, and we need to mobilize everyone to make it a national priority,” said Fred Moore, global director of Manufacturing and Technology for Dow’s Energy business. “As an industrial energy consumer, we recognize that the business community can and should be more aggressive in supporting energy efficiency, and Dow intends to lead by example. We are committed to applying the power of Dow people – the human element – to help address some of the world’s most pressing problems. Focusing on energy efficiency is one step that all of us can take right now to be part of the solution to America’s energy challenges.”

Corporate Commitment to Energy Efficiency

In support of the National Action Plan for Energy Efficiency, Dow underscored its corporate commitment to reducing the Company’s energy intensity by 25% worldwide from 2005 to 2015, as one of its recently announced 2015 Sustainability Goals. To achieve this energy intensity reduction, global Energy Efficiency Team Leaders throughout Dow have committed to developing and leading the implementation of action plans to achieve aggressive energy intensity reductions at each of the Company’s major manufacturing sites throughout the world and within each Dow business unit.

Dow recently exceeded its prior 10-year energy efficiency goal, reducing the Company’s global energy intensity by 22% through 2005 – and realizing more than $4 billion in cumulative energy savings over the same time period. Since 1990 Dow has improved its overall energy efficiency by more than 42%.

Leading by Example

In addition to promoting energy efficiency within the Company, Dow has also recently supported several energy efficiency campaigns designed to help industrial, commercial and residential energy consumers save energy and money. Dow is an active participant in the U.S. Department of Energy’s “Save Energy Now” industrial energy efficiency effort and has hosted and participated in several training seminars and energy saving assessment programs throughout the country.

In June Dow was named the 2006 “Galaxy Star of Energy Efficiency” by the Alliance to Save Energy, in recognition of the company’s significant and tangible commitment and contributions to the cause of energy efficiency.
