Sun Number Launches Free Solar Assessment Website for Property Owners in Washington, D.C. Metro Area

Sun Number has launched a free online service that makes it possible for property owners in the Washington, D.C. metro area to instantly find out the solar energy potential of their home or commercial property. Available at www.sunnumber.com, this service has just been made available for people in the D.C. metro area, including the cities of Alexandria, Falls Church, and Manassas as well as Montgomery County, Prince George’s County, Charles County, Loudoun County, Fairfax County, Arlington County, Prince William County and other suburban D.C. areas in Maryland and Virginia.
 
Developed with funding from the U.S. Department of Energy’s SunShot initiative, this first-of-its-kind service makes it possible for anyone in this region to obtain an immediate assessment of how suitable a building is for rooftop solar. The assessment provides a Sun Number Score between 1 and 100 as well as other easy-to-understand information that explains how much a building can benefit from installation of solar on the rooftop.  
 
“This may surprise some people because Washington, D.C. isn’t in the Sun Belt, but the D.C. area is a great region for rooftop solar energy generation year-round,” said David Herrmann, co-founder of Sun Number. “Our research shows that rooftops in the Washington D.C. Metro Area can generate enough electricity to meet 119% of the electricity demand for the city of Washington, D.C. That is a tremendous amount of solar potential, and Sun Number makes it simple for property owners to quickly find out how much they could benefit from solar at no cost.”

The Sun Number website provides a free, instantaneous analysis that allows property owners to turn their curiosity about solar energy into practical information about how much money they can save in utility costs by installing solar panels. The site also offers to connect the property owner with a local solar provider that can discuss solar solutions in more detail with no obligation to buy. The service was developed with funding from a DOE program designed to educate the public about solar energy and broaden adoption of the technology nationwide.
 
“Just type in the address of your home or commercial building at sunnumber.com and it gives you a Sun Number Score that explains the dollar value of the electricity that rooftop solar panels could generate per year,” said Herrmann. “It gives you an accurate estimate of the amount that property owners can save in utility costs per year. It also helps people understand how favorable their roof is compared to the average for the region,”
 
Sun Number for Solar Companies
For solar companies in the D.C. area, Sun Number provides an instant, accurate analysis of a property’s solar potential during the very first conversation with a customer. This is dramatically faster and less expensive than the traditional method, which required solar companies to send a truck to the property for an employee to conduct a rooftop assessment. That process not only ties up the employee for half a day of on-site work but often slows down the consultation process with the customer by several days.
