BASF donates $177,000 to Capital Area United Way

GEISMAR, LA -- BASF Geismar employees presented a check totaling $177,000 to the Capital Area United Way during a recent kick-off event for the 2013 fundraising campaign.



“We appreciate the many ways that Capital Area United Way supports the community and provides much-needed services that help improve lives,” said Tom Yura, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the BASF site in Geismar, La. “ The people that United Way helps are our neighbors, our friends, and our families. Every day in our community, and even in our own workplace, we hear stories about people in need. At BASF, we share the United Way’s commitment to improve lives is by mobilizing the caring power of communities. ”



The check, which represents all of the sponsorships, event fundraisers and corporate and employee pledges made by BASF employees during the 2012 campaign, was presented to the Capital Area United Way during a jambalaya fundraiser at the Geismar site, an annual company event that raises thousands of dollars each year.



“Capital Area United Way is proud to have BASF continue to support our efforts in making our communities better places for all to live,” said Richard Williams, Capital Area United Way Interim President and CEO. “We greatly appreciate their efforts to give back to the communities we serve to advance the common good.”



According the Yura, the passion of BASF employees is what makes the United Way support at the company a success. The campaign is an employee-led drive that begins with the site’s jambalaya cook-off in May, includes a chili cook-off in the fall, and continues through October with the employee pledge drive.



“At our Geismar site, we have more than 1,600 direct and contract employees. Our employees live in the local community and raise their families here. So we continuously support their generous volunteerism and United Way support and encourage them to take an active role in our community to make it an even better place to live and work,” said Yura.
