Pennsylvania Feature Film using National Crowdfunding

WERNERSVILLE, PA (May 12, 2013) Fresh Ground Pictures, a division of Berks County digital media company, Imageworks Film & Video, Inc. is producing a new feature film. The science fiction thriller “Dark Moon” will begin production later this year in Berks County, with release in early 2015.
 
The company has chosen to complete the film’s financing using the national website Kickstarter.  Kickstarter, and other sites like it, are funding platforms for creative projects; everything from films, games, and music, to art, design, and technology.  More than a dozen Kickstarter projects from the Reading, PA area have been successfully funded in the last two years alone.  Roughly 10% of the films accepted by the 2012 Sundance, Tribeca, and South by Southwest film festivals were funded on Kickstarter. Six Kickstarter-funded films have been nominated for Academy Awards. One of them, Inocente, came away with an Oscar in 2013.
 
John Krawlzik, the writer/director of the project, says, “Each project is independently created and crafted by the person behind it. The filmmakers, musicians, artists, and designers you see on Kickstarter have complete control and responsibility over their projects.  Project creators set their project’s funding goal and deadline. If people like the project, they pledge money to make it happen. If the project falls short of its funding goal, no one is charged.  Many backers donate because they are just inspired by a new idea. Others look for tangible project rewards — a copy of what’s being made, movie credits, posters, or original prop pieces.”
