Recently, Derrick Dennis was asked to provide an article about asbestos for use by the Arizona Insurance Claims Association.  Mr. Denis’ past experiences and role as Vice President of Indoor Environmental Quality at Clark Seif Clark (CSC) has provided him with over 19 years of experience dealing with asbestos and other indoor air quality issues.

His article appeared in the March issue of the AICA Bulletin and was entitled, “Expert’s Corner-The ABC’s of Asbestos.” Although some people may not consider asbestos to be the health concern it was 10 or 20 years ago, Mr. Denis reminds readers that asbestos is still with us.  “Massive numbers of industry rookies and veterans alike are entirely unaware or are horribly misinformed regarding this federally, state and locally regulated material,” wrote Mr. Denis. “My involvement with recent responses to hurricane Sandy confirmed this theory.  Few are considering asbestos as thousands of Sandy-impacted buildings are torn apart, thereby potentially exposing workers and occupants to this known hazard and extending the liability of building owners and operators,” he continued.

Many people don’t realize that products containing asbestos can still be found in the United States.  The article states, “Still today, over 3,000 different asbestos-containing products are imported and used in the U.S.  By all indications no change in asbestos policy is forthcoming for the foreseeable future.”

There are a host of medical conditions that can develop years after exposure to asbestos fibers.  These include pleural plaque, pleural effusion, asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma.

Additional articles authored by CSC’s expert staff are scheduled to appear in the July and August issues of Restoration & Remediation Magazine (R&R).
